At the Citygate 2023 National Conference, Rescue Ministries of Mid-Michigan first encountered renowned Christian artist Brian Peterson. That’s when an exciting vision began to take shape.
“City Rescue Mission, which is one of our two shelters, serves an average of 134 people each day, including families with children,” said Rescue Ministries CEO Dan Streeter. “We were looking for a way to celebrate our families and when we saw the beautiful murals Brian was doing at shelters across the country, the wheels started turning!”
A plan was developed to significantly improve the outdoor children’s play area at City Rescue Mission, and work with Brian to design and install a building-sized mural to beautify this new space. The goal was to provide an empowering, functional place for guests. A place to inspire them with positive portrayals of family life and next steps, as they enjoy updated landscaping, and time spent outside in play and togetherness. In addition, the mural would be visible to the community, making it a positive benefit for residents and visitors as well.
More than a year later, Brian and his team have come and gone, and the project is complete! “Not only did Brian do amazing work on the mural, but it was a joy to spend a week with him. He took time with our staff and did an art activity with our kids. He truly has a heart for the Lord and serving others,” Streeter said.
According to Brian:
The Rescue Ministries mural was a true collaboration between me and the leadership team. They shared their passion for the mission and their excitement about what God is doing among them. From this discussion, the theme emerged: family, fellowship, prayer, and housing, all leading to transformation in the lives of their guests. The colors were inspired by the vibrant and hopeful spirit of the mission. Each hue was chosen to reflect the warmth of community, the light of faith, and the promise of renewal. The 106-foot-long wall stands as a testament to their dedication to following God’s guidance as He continues to restore lives in their city. By blending these colors, I aimed to create a visual representation of the unity and strength that come from this transformative journey.
Brian also delivered a powerful keynote at the Rescue Ministries Anniversary Dinner Gala in September, 2024. Everyone in attendance was inspired by his message about creativity and worship. Shortly thereafter, the City Rescue Mission Play Area & Mural was officially dedicated.
“Our guests are already enjoying the new space and mural.” Streeter said. “We’re so thankful for this project and pray it continues to be a blessing for many years to come.”
